With more attention on the startup scene than ever, it’s arguably the best and worst time to make the jump. It’s the best time because the potential for game-changing innovation and financial growth is attractive to say the least. But it’s also the worst because this overly zealous attitude is causing the word “overvalued” to be thrown around left and right. The reality is that generally you do your hours, your prospects are never guaranteed, and your pay and benefits will likely be lower than a cushy corporate job.
Think you have what it takes? You’re going to be submerged in a culture where your work matters, and that’s precisely the reason why you’re going to work longer and harder. You want to be good at what you do because someone will point out very quickly if you’re not up to par. You’re going to wear more hats than your job description because you’re involved in every aspect of the business, so you need to learn a bit of everything. You know that you’re not just another cog in the machine because what you do matters, and with that comes responsibility and difficult days. For these reasons, it may be hard to strike up a work-life balance at times working at a startup. But the good news is, passion is never in short supply because the fruit of your labour is tangible. You can see it, and you’re proud of it. Are you up for the challenge?
