7 Things Successful People do on their Work Commute (and it’s not Social Media)

Ah yes, the dreaded work commute. It’s something we all have to put up with, and in an overpopulated city like Hong Kong, the sardines-life is that much more real. Public transportation may seem grim, but taking advantage of it actually allows you the gift of time - something successful people value more than anything else.

Whether you’re stuck between two people who have doused themselves in perfume on the MTR, or taking a rickety mini-bus across the harbour, there’s always room to make your commute more productive, regardless of how stressful it is. In fact, taking yourself away from the lack of personal space can actually make your commute more bearable!

Read on to find out some simple tasks you can do on the go (unless you’re driving, of course):

LISTEN TO A PODCAST OR AUDIOBOOK

Start your day with some inspiration or interesting facts by tuning in to your favourite Podcast with or book with the Audible app. Let yourself escape to another world as you gaze out the window - just remember not to miss your stop! Check out some of our favourite Podcasts here.

MAKE YOUR TO-DO LIST

Visualise your workday, and write out all the tasks you’d like to complete or continue from the day before. Sync this with your work computer using Apps like Evernote and Wunderlist, so it’s there right when you get in.

REVISIT YOUR GOALS

Get yourself in the mentality to kill it at work by reviewing your goals, and mapping out your progress and what you hope to achieve. Doing so first thing even before you get into the office will help you get pumped up and energised for the day. Check out some of our tips and tricks for setting and accomplishing your goals.

CLEAR YOUR INBOX

Almost all of us will check our emails first thing when we get in, so why not get that out of the way while you’re in the car? If you prefer not to read in a moving vehicle, you can always ask Siri to read your emails for you by saying “read my emails”.

CATCH UP ON CONTENT

Whether it’s articles, videos, blogposts - or all of the above - we all have a list of content we want to read or watch later. What better time to do so than your work commute? Apps like Stash are great for bookmarking any type of content you’re interested in in one place.

MEDITATION STATION

While a public bus may not seem like the most zen location, you can easily fit in a meditation session if the environment allows. You can set the duration on Apps like Headspace, put in your headphones, and wait for the stress to melt away.

LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE

Keeping to the theme of audio learning, why not learn that language you’ve been telling everyone you’ve wanted to learn for years? Apps like Duolingooffer great, short lessons for you to learn a new language bit by bit.
